UASD File Creator
Updated 8-9-05

What is it?
This is a simple script that will allow you to copy and paste tab or comma delimited talk group info into a box and create a usd file for the BCD396T.

Why?
I like to keep my 396 in Search Mode on my trunked systems but I also like to have the talk groups names programmed in so I don't have to keep referring to RadioReference.com for the names. Since some of the trunked systems are large and I'm lazy, I didn't want to take the time to type all of them into UASD so instead I took even more time and created this script.

What doesn't it do?
This script does not replace UASD. You will still need to go into UASD to set your quick keys, group keys and the other options to your liking. It also will not error check your frequecies for system consistancy.

What does it do?
It allows you to enter the frequencies for the trunked system along with a complete list of talk groups and formats the file for the system type that is selected. It also makes sure that the Alpha tags do not exceed 16 characters which would error out in UASD. It will setup groups for your TRS based on the fourth column or the Group column in RR.com. The order it creates the groups is based on the order it sees the groups in your pasted data. It will keep you to the 20 System Group limit also by finding the first 20 groups in your list and then ignoring any new groups afterwards. It will also keep you to the 200 tgid limit per system ignoring any talk groups after the 200 limit.

How does it work?
Ah, now we come to the fun part. It is extremely simple but somewhat fragile in its usage. Let's step through it.

  1. The first selection is for Automatic or Manual Field Selection. If you wish to use Automatic you can leave it be, if you'd have problems with the Automatic you can select manual to pick the field format that your data is in.

  2. Select the System type.

  3. Enter in a name for your system, this will also be its file name. You are limited to 16 characters.

  4. Enter in the frequencies for your trunked system. If you are entering a EDACS or LTR system you must enter them in LCN order as this is how they will be converted into the USD file.

  5. If you pick Manual Field Selection, you will now pick the format that your data is in otherwise you can now just pick either tab, comma, or IE two space delimited format. It seems that IE does not copy a table as tab delimited text, instead it copies it as text with two spaces between columns. The IE two space delimiting should solve this problem. Otherwise you can copy the text, paste it into Excel and then copy and paste that into the text box then picking the tab delimited text format.

  6. Paste in your talk groups. I sort the RadioReference.com talk groups by tgid and then just copy the talk group table and past it into the text box. You must choose "List All in one table" for the groups column to appear. This column is critical since it sets up the groups in your system for UASD.

    To the UASD creator:

    Talk Groups

This example shows a tab delimited copy and paste from the above RadioReference.com table into the UASD creator.

  7. Hit the "Make My File" button and a file dialog will pop up asking where you want to save the .usd file. Pick the directory that all of the rest of your .usd files are located in and it will now appear the next time you start UASD.

Notes: Copy and Paste directly from Excel (2000 tested) will paste the data in as tab delimited which will work very well. I would recommend that if you do not like the order of the groups, you copy the data to Excel, rework its order and content, and then copy and paste it into this script. If coping from Firefox to Excel, you need to paste the data into notepad and re-copy and then paste into Excel in order for Excel to recognize the tab delimiting. This is not needed if you are doing the copy and paste from IE to Excel.

This script has been tested with IE 6 and Firefox 1.06 along with Excel 2000.
